Year 12 Year 12 were farewelled with a formal assembly on the last day of Term 3. The partnership between the Tumbarumba Rotary Club and the school has been successful in gaining a Schools First Impact award. This is a most prestigious award. At a special assembly on October 1 National Australia Bank Riverina Manager Nicole Killen presented a cheque worth $50000 to Principal Sheila Ayliffe and Rotary Club of Tumbarumba President Ian Pratt. This award will ensure the continuation of the most successful Kokoda project. Grant Harris and Rotarian Bruce Wright attended the State Final in Sydney on October 28. 21 schools and their community partners were in the running for the State Award. This was won by St Francis de Sales College of Leeton. We thank the Foundation for Young Australians, the Australian Council for Educational Research and the National Australia Bank for their involvement in these awards.
Year 9 receive their Learning Devices Last week Year 9 received their laptops as part of the Federal Government rollout.
Booroolong Frog Project Tumbarumba High and Primary Schools were invited to the 2009 New South Wales Landcare Awards as finalists for their work on Project Booroolong. The awards were held at Port Macquarie on September 10. A group of twenty-four students, teachers and parents from both schools attended the dinner. The high school was represented by three of the project’s prize winners, Jessie Green, Anna Eggleton and Jackson McIntyre.
The awards dinner included a three course meal followed by music and dancing. Entertainment was provided by an ABBA revival band, FABBA. Jackson McIntrye was very excited to win the door prize, including a large basket of confectionery. The evening was topped by an address from the Landcare Ambassador and Australian icon, Jack Thompson. He later met with our students, signed autographs and posed for photos. The evening was a great success and would not have been possible without the hard work of the students and other volunteers, most important among them being the staff of Taronga Zoo. Congratulations to all who were involved in Project Booroolong, but especially to the more than seventy Year 9, 7 and 6 students whose work last year made this award possible
State Athletics Carnival
Cayden Wilesmith travelled to Sydney last week representing Tumbarumba High and the Riverina to compete in the State Athletics Carnival held at the Olympic Park in Homebush Bay. Cayden was extremely pleased with his results. On the track Cayden ran the 100m sprint in 12.89 seconds and was placed 13th in the 200m sprint running a time of 26.28 seconds, these are both Cayden’s personal best records. In the field events Cayden participated in high jump, jumping 1.5m and long jump, jumping 4.92m, this was a very pleasing result for Cayden as training is difficult in town.
Technology Support Officer
We welcome to the school Craig Edwards. Craig will oversee the rollout of the Learning Devices (laptops) to Year 9 students next week and then support their implementation. Craig will be based in the library and his expertise will be of great benefit to the school.
Riverina Bowls Team Year 8 student Jordan Dennis represented Riverina in the CHS Bowls team that contested the State Championships at St Johns Park in Sydney. The team had a great time despite losing most of their matches. Jordan gained plenty of experience from his involvement.
